As an education consultant, Janyce is familiar with a wide range of private schools and programs, and many local public/separate school options, and can assist parents and students with the application, interview or portfolio process. She helps match children and teens to just the "right" schools and programs, whether locally or internationally through each stage of their education, from grade school to graduation. But not all clients want or need to change schools. Janyce also recommends specific strategies and supports, whether summer enrichment programs, community service opportunities, classroom accommodations or strategic course selection, to enhance the particular student’s overall education experience. Academic success is too often defined solely by marks, test scores or letter grades. But in fact, they are but one factor contributing to the likelihood of future success in the adult world, Janyce’s recommendations can also address specific ways to bolster key complementary learning skills including goal-setting, initiative, creativity, flexible thinking, social and communication skills, resilience and conflict resolution, academic self-esteem and self-advocacy, etc. As a case manager, Janyce also has extensive experience in and expertise with understanding how best to assist and place hard-to-serve children, youth and young adults. Whether struggling with learning, emotional, medical, legal or other life challenges (or some combination of these factors), Janyce also supports the family through the process. Information, referrals or guidance can address alternative forms of assessment or specialist intervention, adaptive programming, resources and technology, supports at home, school or in the community, and alternatives for placement outside the home where needed. Additionally, Janyce is familiar with a variety of innovative, reputable and highly effective outdoor education/therapeutic wilderness programs, emotional growth boarding schools, residential treatment options, transitional schools and programs, as well as specialized settings promoting life skills or independent living across North America.

We do not offer psychological or psycho-educational assessments at The Tutor Group. Personalized referral lists are available to our clients however, along with referral lists for other related assessments.

Special Tutoring Services - Core Tutoring

“Core Tutoring” is used by students writing standardized examinations or school entrance tests, who need to strengthen their core knowledge (and test scores) in a particular content area (eg. Algebra and Geometry, vocabulary, essayʼ/writing sample). Core Tutoring may be accompanied by Test Tips or Test Taking Skills supports or stand alone.

Special Tutoring Services - Mentor-tutoring

2. "Mentor-tutoring" is another premium service provided by TTG specialty tutors. This highly individualized process is increasingly in demand, as it allows the most challenging, interesting, and often very bright students access to academic support (remedial, classroom support or enrichment) that they might otherwise refuse. Mentor tutoring is available daytime hours Mondays to Fridays during the school day as well as during more traditional tutoring times. Through alternative approaches, creative strategies, considerable intuition and shared humour, our mentor tutors, under direct guidance from TTG Director Janyce Lastman, use the student's strengths and passions to tackle more sensitive, weaker areas. They develop highly individualized programs promoting social and life-skills, problem solving and progressive independence. Mentor tutoring requires much patience, enthusiasm and energy, as its success is dependent upon developing the personal relationship first, gradually forging a bond of mutual trust and respect

In-home Private Tutoring

The Tutor Group™ is the gold standard option for students looking to supplement their schooling with an in-home tutor. In Toronto, one-on-one tutorials are available in the family home, parent's office or student's school. Tutoring by TTG Tutors can provide valuable and effective student assistance in several different ways, including: * Classroom Support: helps with current schoolwork (homework, assignments, concepts, tests etc) * Remediation: fills in gaps from previous years, or re-teaches recent concepts not consolidated * Enrichment: works ahead of peers often by a full grade or more; and/or delves deeply into or topics of particular student interest beyond the standard curriculum * Bridging: helps close temporary gaps between differing content levels or increased expectations, often following a change in education systems Our experienced, professional tutors specialize in specific content areas such as maths and sciences, French, English as a Second Language, reading comprehension, written expression, study and organizational skills, research and essay writing etc. Most subjects at the elementary and high school level are available, along with selected postsecondary courses and adult tutoring.

School Placement Consultation

All school placement (and other Educational) Consultations and Case Management Services are expertly managed by Janyce Lastman. These services include: * School Placement Recommendation - consultations that recommend school placement options and help with access issues such as the application, testing and interview process, compare the relative merits of particular schools, etc. * Transition Planning - consultations that advise how to get the most from a new placement, skill bridging, ease the transition (including tips for relocating families) and prepare for what to expect in the first days, first school term, and first year * Ongoing Support - case management, coordination of supporting professionals (treatment team approach), advocacy, assistance with classroom accommodations etc. Of particular assistance to those with special learning, emotional, medical and/or life experience needs.
