Vergers McMillan : Family Fun Activities for Kids in Franklin
he McMillan farm has been an apple, syrup and a registered Ayrshire dairy farm for well over one hundred years. Linda’s great grandfather, Alexander McMillan settled in Franklin in the 1800’s and bought this farm for his son Wilbert in 1904 for $1200.00.
Here they raised their family of three girls and a boy. Times were difficult on the farm and they supplemented their income by taking in boarders as well as training horses and operating a roadside stand. Unfortunately Wilbert fell ill at an early age forcing the only son Ray (Linda’s father) to quite school to take on the farming duties. There were many debts facing the farm and one of the large maple bushes of great grand father McMillan had to be cut and sold to help pay down the debt. It took three years with hand operated crosscut saws to complete the cutting project.
Ray had a family of three children. The youngest daughter Linda and her husband Gary purchased the seventy five acre family farm from the estate in 1999. The dairy operation had been sold a number of years earlier
