Nature Up Close
Educational > General
Discovering the world through the lens of a microscope reveals surprising marvels. This outdoor exhibition of 40 giant photos invites you to explore these fascinating and beautiful sights, most of which cannot be seen with the naked eye. By exploring the mineral, plant and animal world, Nature Close Up! illustrates the importance of the links among living species and between them and their environment. On this journey, you will also discover the wonderful evolutionary adaptations these species have made, as well as ways they have inspired humanity. The shapes, colours and behaviours that species develop to survive are a marvel of ingenuity and extravagance! This wonderful ingenuity of nature has inspired a multitude of innovations. The energy efficiency of photosynthesis and the solidity of mother-of-pearl are just a few examples that researchers try to imitate for the greater well-being of humanity. Presented at the heart of this exhibition, the science of reproducing the finest inventions of nature is called “biomimicry.” Walking through the exhibition, visitors can also admire examples of "bio-inspired" architecture. As they have evolved, millions of species have had to overcome challenges that architects face today. Studying such things as skeletons and spider webs has helped make “bio-inspired” architecture effective and innovative in its creation of some spectacular buildings. The visionary architect Richard Buckminster Fuller, creator of the Biosphere, was inspired by microscopic organisms, the Spumellarian radiolarian skeletons, to create his geodesic dome. Presented free until May 22, 2013, Nature Close Up! lines the path stretching from the Jean-Drapeau metro station to the Biosphere.Date : 2012-06-15 to 2013-05-22

Finding Balance
Educational > Science
Finding balance is clearly a universal goal. It defines the relationship between society and the environment. As we seek balance both individually and collectively, we face questions about the limitations of the natural world. But is achieving balance between people and the environment possible? Is it desirable? There are numerous ways to work toward harmony with the natural environment. To discover them, we have to ask the right questions and acknowledge that we all affect the environment through our lifestyle. This new permanent exhibition shows 10 examples of the impact our consumer choices are having on the environment, 10 environmental issues, which together contribute to ecological imbalance. 1) Degradation of aquifers 2) Loss of wildlife habitat 3) Goodbye, Thunnus Thynnus? 4) Brown clouds 5) Exporting pollution 6) Fire, ice and arctic wildlife 7) Greener consumption 8) Move over, we’re expanding! 9) Electronic waste for sale 10) Continents of plastic Discover this wonderful exhibition and find a balance!Date : Anytime

Water Wonders!
Family Fun > Museums
H2O is the chemical symbol for water, a vital resource! As a source of life, water is closely linked to the history of humanity. Without water, it would have been impossible to farm, explore continents or trade. Waterways have led to the development of great civilizations. As a result, cities have sprung up near rivers and other bodies of water. Ever since, humans have been using water more or less ingeniously to their advantage. What would we do without water? Eight interactive modules on the characteristics of water illustrate mankind’s ingeniousness in the quest for the planet’s most precious resource, raise awareness of this resource’s fragility and help us discover its properties and uses through games and experiments. Don't forget to bring spare clothing...Date : Anytime

Planet Bucky
Family Fun > Museums
The purpose of this permanent exhibit is to acquaint youngsters with the concept of sustainable development. A self-taught visionary, Richard Buckminster Fuller was advocating this principle long before the term was coined. He believed in doing more with less for the good of humanity. Youngsters are fascinated by the surprising and ingenious aspects of inventions. Inventors have the ability to see things as they are not. Inventions help to propel our societies forward and improve our quality of life. The exhibit presents some of Buckminster Fuller’s inventions alongside contemporary innovations, all of them related to sustainable development: green architecture, water savings, sustainable transportation, solar energy, satellite Earth observation, wind turbines, marine turbines and biofiltration.Date : Anytime

+ 1°C: What difference does it make
Educational > Science
This new exhibition takes a scientific approach to answering several common questions about one of the 21st century’s key issues: climate change. What will happen if temperatures rise by 1°C? How can we anticipate what temperatures will be a hundred years from now? It’s cold today, so why are we talking about global warming? Scientists answer these questions through life-sized video presentations and demystify concepts that are often complex but essential for a clearer understanding of the phenomenon. The “Magic Planet”, measuring 1.2 m in height and the only such interactive digital Earth globe in Quebec, is the centrepiece of one of the exhibition’s five stations. Through satellite imagery, this globe allows visitors to observe natural, meteorological and climatic phenomena such as ocean currents and hurricanes. This impressive sphere will also enable you to learn more through a selection of available multimedia presentations.Date : Anytime
