The Secret to Happiness (and a Perky Yoga Butt). Happy Moms go to HappyTree, Part 2

Cheeky Mel

We women are funny creatures. And by funny I mean complicated and irrational. Like when we think that all that stands between us and Samadhi (pure bliss) is ten pounds and a perky yoga butt.

The good news is you can lose weight and tone your whole body by doing yoga, and it’s an excellent reason for getting started. You can also do yoga to show off the new Lululemon gear you got for Christmas, or because Doctor Oz said it would help lower your stress levels, or because you think the instructor is cute. In fact, any reason you can think of at all for doing yoga is a good one, because the hardest part is making the commitment and showing up.

But then something else happens…

Picture being in a heated room, heart pounding, sweat dripping, as you hold a deep, thigh burning lunge in warrior I pose, “for 5….. 4….. 3…..”. The voice of the teacher fades off, and all at once a deep sense of calm washes through your body as you softly focus on your own gaze in the mirror, while listening to the steady rhythm of your breath. You feel strong, grounded, powerful and beautiful. Your mind goes quiet, and you see yourself as more than the sum of your parts. You are more than just a mother, a wife, a career woman, and a butt (no matter what it looks like).

This feeling of wholeness is what sets yoga apart from other forms of exercise. After all, the word yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root “yuj”, meaning “to yolk” or “to unite”. The fit, toned body, new found flexibility, and the compliments on your outfit are simply the side effects.

At HappyTree you can choose not only Hot Yoga, but other forms of yoga, to help you with your New Year’s resolutions. In fact, if you say you read this article, your first class will be on us: another good reason to get started! Call HappyTree today 514-846-YOGA (9642).

    Exhilarating!
Mel, this is a very honest illustration of the dynamic of your thoughts and feelings during the first 30 minutes of any practice. I wish I’d started yoga earlier in life. Very insightful (and gender specific as well,) especially the “more than the sum of your parts” part.

It’s funny reading this article this evening, because I just got back from a yin class where I had a really similar experience to what you’re describing. I was especially stiff from being stuck in bed with a cold for the last couple days, and the poses were really hurting, but suddenly I found my breathing in a deep pigeon and everything melted away; I was relaxed and content and could just observe the my body rather than reacting to it. A really great feeling :)

Hi Melanie and the rest of the cool teachers and Dawn too:
I’m not doing this for the free class. It’s been over a year since I joined H. Tree and I still feel so good when I walk in there and better when I leave, as the yoga helps me so much in all areas, physical, mental and spiritual.

Last night, I went to the Guns’n'Roses concert and the waiting between the shows was very long as Axl is always so fashionably late and to kill time, I did my breathing and meditating, which I learned at H. Tree. Wow, I was ready to rock…

Thank you for all your help and kindness,

    Odette

I went to Guns’n'Roses too and I need Happy Tree more than ever….all that dancing and waiting.

Hello! Discipline, that’s my point. I haven’t practice yoga for more than 4 months and I have gained a lot of weight. I miss my classes! Thank you for sharing this article, I’m feeling motivated to go back to the heating room!
