Salt Dough Christmas Ornament Craft for Kids
With the cold weather finally settling in, it would appear that winter is just a snowflake away. What better way to get ahead of the Christmas season than by creating a fun and easy Christmas craft with your kids. This Christmas craft for kids may take a little bit of time, but the effort will be well worth it!
Making salt dough Christmas ornaments will get your child measuring, mixing, baking and creating. I love baking with my kids! Your toddler, preschooler and elementary-aged child will all equally love this holiday arts and craft!
To make the dough and then the ornaments you will need:
2 cups flour
1 cup salt
1 cup water
Cookie Cutters
Paint
Paintbrush
Glitter Glue
Ribbon or string
Preheat the oven to 325°F.
Mix the flour and salt together and add ½ cup of water. Gradually add the remaining water and mix until you have a smooth consistency. Knead the dough for about 10 minutes, or until the dough is smooth. Try to involve your child as much as possible throughout this whole process – your toddler and preschooler could easily help with pouring and mixing and kneading while your elementary-age child could do this all on their own!
Roll the dough out to desired thickness and let your child use the cookie cutters to cut out the shapes. Place them on an ungreased baking sheet covered with parchment paper. If you plan to hang your ornaments, use the end of a paintbrush to poke a hole at the top of your shape.
Bake for about 1½ hours (or until the dough has dried out). Cool completely.
Once the shapes have cooled completely set out the paint, glitter and paintbrushes and let your child have fun! Paint, add glitter glue to the salt dough ornaments and attach a ribbon or string to your Christmas ornament. Make sure to lay the salt dough ornaments flat while the paint and glitter dries.
Salt dough ornaments are a great holiday arts and crafts activity that you and your child will admire on your tree for years to come!
